OT network – short for Operational Technology network, this is a relatively new term for the backbone that connects building automation components. As discussed in the operational technology term page, OT consists of the systems and devices that are bolted to the building and established to monitor or alter the physical state of a building.
With the Internet of Things, these devices are becoming smarter with IP capabilities so they can be connected to from remote locations, monitored from visual dashboards and controlled from anywhere in the world. The OT network enables this enhanced level of access. Starting with a fiber backbone in most cases, the network is established for connections to all the devices that fall downstream from the network. At the enterprise level, secure access points can be created through proprietary technologies that are available to building controls contractors.
OT network components:
- Secure access points
- Individual devices on individual floors
