Data model

Data model a data model is a structure designed to assign relationships to individual pieces of information, telling the data what form to take at what times. Data models are typically graphic depictions showing where the data comes from, what concepts are applied to it (what the user wants to know from the data), and what it means (semantics).

Examples of data models:

  • Flat model
  • Hierarchical model
  • Network model
  • Relational model
  • Object-relational model
  • Star schema

Data models are used to structure how data is processed in a system. For building automation, operational technology networks and especially building analytics, data models establish the rules around which data is processed through the system. Devices simply produce too much data to sift through without a structure.
