PLC Programmer – Automation and Controls
Controlco – Bakersfield, CA
Controlco is seeking a full-time PLC Programmer. This position is located in Bakersfield, CA.
Job Summary
This position will be responsible for programming automation and controls systems involving DCS, PLC’s, HMI’s, and process controllers. The programmer must be able to create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design. The role requires the ability to troubleshoot equipment and resolve issues efficiently. This role also requires some travel to customer sites for onsite commissioning of the equipment.
The PLC Programmer must have thorough knowledge of electrical design and engineering techniques. The candidate will devise new approaches to problems, modify drawings, specifications, calculations, manuals, charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering standards.
Essential Job Functions
- Development of DCS program for automated processes.
- Development of PLC programs for automated equipment.
- Development of HMI programs for automated equipment.
- Responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, products, procedures and criteria.
- Devise new approaches to problems, and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, manuals, charts and graphs.
- Plan and conduct cost estimates.
- Specify control components.
- Ensure proper interdisciplinary coordination and effective communication on projects.
- Analyze reports, drawings, tests, and other data to plan and design work.
- Evaluate electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing, applying knowledge of electricity, programming, and materials.
- Research, develop, design, and test a wide range of machinery, both as standard products and with custom features, according to requirements of individual customers.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Complete special projects upon requests, and other duties may be assigned.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate(s) will:
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Systems Technology, Automation Technology, or Electrical Controls Engineering; or the equivalent in work experience.
- Have 3-4 years of work experience in Engineering, Programming, or related fields (5+ years machine building, automation, integration, or other automation intensive industry sector is preferred).
- Have thorough knowledge of electrical design and engineering techniques.
- Have strong computer skills including: Honeywell DCS, Modicon Software, Rockwell Software, AutoCAD, MS Word, Project, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Outlook (Experience with Solid Works is preferable).
- Possess the ability to multi-task and bring multiple projects to completion on time and on budget.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving, critical thinking, committed team player, with strong leadership and performance management skills capable of stepping up to assure that projects are completed.
- Be willing travel approximately 30% during start-ups and installations.

Technical Sales Representative – Automation and Controls

Controlco is seeking a full-time Technical Sales Representative. This position is located in Pleasant Hill, CA.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for selling applications and solutions in the industrial and/or automation and controls market. There is an emphasis on key and target account development, along with providing consultative solutions. The successful candidates will develop an annual territory business plan to include the acquisition of new accounts, and effective growth. Additionally, this role will seek out innovative solutions for key industry segments as defined by the joint sales and marketing business plan. This position is responsible for generating revenue in an assigned geographical area consistent with market potential, established quotas and margin expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement business/territory plans.
- Close business consistently at or above target revenue and margin levels.
- Follow established methods of effective selling, demonstrating improved efficiency and close rate.
- Demonstrate competency in product demonstrations and applications.
- Follow up and close out sales leads in a timely manner.
- Penetrate new target accounts and maintain key accounts to increase market share.
- Use sales automation software for developing and tracking opportunities throughout the sales cycle, as well as for developing and maintaining a customer database and specific key/target account data.
- Participate in applicable trade shows, associations and local in-house shows and seminars.
- Attend and participate in Sales/Training Meetings as a solid team player.
- Be responsible for and initiate self-development to elevate job knowledge and self-education.
- Prospect for new clients and opportunities.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on Engineering, Industry and Technology, or Business Administration with 5-7 years of sales experience and a proven track record in the industrial marketplace.
- Must be proficient in MS Office software, have solid organizational skills and professional image.
- Must have knowledge of PLC and distributed control systems (DCS)
- Understanding of PC application and related connectivity is beneficial.
- Sales experience with OEMs, VARs, integrators, and engineering houses is helpful.
- Netsuite or other CRM knowledge/experience preferred.

Technical Support Specialist (TSS) – Automation and Controls

Controlco is seeking a full-time Technical Support Specialist. This position is located in Pleasant Hill, CA.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for troubleshooting and solving technical issues from our customers. Controlco provides complete product certification training to become capable of supporting our range of automation software and hardware. The Controlco TSS is guided to follow proven processes that clearly identify and document technical problems as described by the customer and resolve them within desired service levels. Controlco provides ongoing training and recertification to all TSS staff so that they are well-prepared to handle any technical issues that comes their way.
As a Technical Support Specialist, you will be expected to provide the highest level of customer service and support to both internal and external customers by:
- Answering incoming phone calls, emails, and all other inquiries presented to Controlco Technical Support.
- Identifying and documenting the problem summary, description, and call details as described by the customer.
- Utilizing all available resources and tools to bring reported issues to resolution within the desired service levels.
- Providing prompt feedback to appropriate key stakeholders for critical issues and escalations.
- Participating in and completing new and updated formal product certification.
- Becoming trained as a subject matter expert in 2 to 3 product areas.
- Following all documented department policies and procedures while providing continuous improvements where applicable.
Technical Skills:
- Experience working with and troubleshooting all current Microsoft operating systems and virtual environments is required.
- Understanding of basic AC and DC circuitry and electronics.
- Comprehensive understanding of current network topologies and protocols is required.
- Knowledge of NiagaraAX, Experion LX, and Microsoft SQL Systems is preferred.
- Previous experience in Process Control, Building Automation, Access Control, Digital Video or related technologies is preferred.
Customer Service Skills:
- Excellent verbal, written and telephone communication skills required
- Candidate must demonstrate outstanding customer service skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with customers, peers, management and other departments
- Must have the ability to multitask and work independently
- Must be detailed oriented in order to effectively resolve technical customer issues.
- Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated and demonstrate excellent problem solving and decision making skills
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and adapt to change
- 2 years’ experience in customer service and/or technical help desk preferred
- Bi-lingual English and Spanish proficiency is desired, but not required.
